Good Morning Students. Please sign in to homeroom. I hope you are enjoying "The Ickabog." Some students have asked me if they can read ahead. Absolutely! Ideally, I would like you to keep up with the daily chapter posts but I don't want to require too many chapters at a time so that you are able to also keep up with your Independent Reading and other school work but if you are enjoying it, by all means, keep on reading. More reading is never a bad thing! I would like you to read and summarize chapters 6-10 due Thursday 6/4 @ 9:00 AM. I also added audio versions of the chapters. On Thursday, I would like to have a Zoom meeting to discuss what we've read so far. I will post the link to the Zoom Thursday morning. I will also hold Zoom office hours tomorrow from 10-12 to answer any questions you may have or to just check in and say hi. As always, you can also email any questions you may have. Keep up with your Independent Reading as well, your third reading response is due Friday 6/12. I will post this week's Reading Log in a separate post.

Hi students! I'm very excited to introduce to you, JK Rowling's new book. It's called "The Ickabog" and will be posted, a chapter or two daily, Monday through Friday, from Tuesday, 5/26 through July 10th. I'd like you to begin reading from chapter one and try to catch up to her daily posts by next Tuesday, 6/2, at the very least, read up to chapter five. The website is posted below along with a template for you to write short chapter summaries as you read. Next week, I'll be posting assessment questions and hosting Zoom discussions. It looks like a great book and should prove to be a fun read! Below is an article about it from BBC News and you can also read more about it on the website.
"JK Rowling has surprised fans with the announcement of a brand new children's book, which she is publishing in daily installments on her website for free.
The Ickabog is her first children's story not to be linked to Harry Potter. She wrote it over a decade ago for her own children and has now dusted it off.
It's for "children on lockdown, or even those back at school during these strange, unsettling times", she said.
She had previously referred to it only as an unnamed "political fairytale".
Chapters of The Ickabog are being published daily until 10 July on The Ickabog website.
The first two chapters, which went online on Tuesday, introduced King Fred the Fearless, ruler of Cornucopia, and five-year-old Bert Beamish.
Readers also learned about the myth of a fearsome monster called The Ickabog, which is "said to eat children and sheep".
Most of Cornucopia was a "magically rich land" with happy people and fine, abundant food, readers are told.
But in the northern tip lived the Marshlanders, who scraped by on meager resources. They had "rough voices, which the other Cornucopians imitated", and were the butt of jokes about "their manners and their simplicity"."

Good Morning Students!
Please Sign in to homeroom.
If you haven't taken the STAR test yet this week, you MUST do it NOW, this is mandatory. Watch the video for instructions.
If you haven't handed in your Gaspee Project or reflection questions yet, get that in today. I'll be reviewing them over the weekend and it will count as a major percentage of your grade.
Today I would like you to work on your Independent Reading and Reading Response which is due by tomorrow at midnight. Make sure you also take the AR test for the book you read and complete and hand in your Reading Log by tomorrow.
Finally, This weekend is Memorial Day and there is no school on Monday. I would like you to write a journal entry. As always, you can write about anything you want but some prompt suggestions are:
*What Memorial Day means to you
*A poem for the veterans
*Pros and cons of distance learning
*What you've learned from the pandemic and staying at home and how will you live your life differently when it's over
As always, reach out to me with questions or concerns.
I will be Zooming on Tuesday 5/26 if anyone would like to share their journal entry live. It would be nice to see those of you who haven't Zoomed with us yet, even if it's just to say hi and listen if you don't want to share.

Good Morning Students,
Please sign in to homeroom before you do anything else.
I read all your topics. Check Aspen and the topic assignment in Google Classroom, if you scored 100, your topic is approved but I may have left a comment to help you improve it. If you scored 0, you didn't do it which means you need to do it NOW and submit it for my approval. If you received no score, then it is not approved, usually because it's too general. Read my comments, adjust your topic, and comment back that you did so and I'll take a look at the revised topic.
Once your topic is approved and you are ready to begin your research with notetaking, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Read the Sources and Notetaking document below. As you read your sources, summarize and paraphrase the information on the Research Notes document below. Make sure to indicate where the information came from and cite it on your Works Cited doc. Some of you are citing incorrectly, please watch the short video below or review Miss McClatchy's video on EasyBib. I'm including an interesting 2 part article from the New England Historical Society that could be used as a source and I added both citations at the bottom of the article. The Research Notes doc is due next Monday morning. Please gather as much relevant information as you can and start thinking about how you want to present it. Thursday I will give more guidance and the next steps.
Finally, I've been in touch with a Brown University professor of computer science who has created a Virtual Reality presentation of the Gaspee story for Arizona State University, and he'd like to share it with us. I'm including a short survey, and video, to help that happen so please fill it out.
As always, make up any missed work, do your Independent Reading and Reading Log and don't forget that your Reading Response is due by Friday night, and Reach out to me with any questions or concerns. I'll be holding Zoom office hours tomorrow.

Although I won't be posting lessons until tomorrow, I am sending out this week's Reading Log. Please make sure to read every day and fill out the log daily. Not only is your Reading Log due by Friday at midnight, so is your first Reading Response for the fourth quarter. You also need to take the AR test for your Independent Reading book by then. I will be commenting on your Gaspee Topic doc today either approving it or asking you to revise it. From looking at them over the weekend, most of the ones that are going to need revision, are too general; remember, choose a specific aspect of the Gaspee, incident, like a certain person's involvement or it's impact on a particular part of Rhode Island society. Look for my comments. I'll also be holding Zoom office hours today from 10:OO -12:00, so feel free to drop in with any questions or just to say hi.

Good Morning Students,
Today we are beginning our 4th quarter writing assessment, the research paper. Due to the unique circumstances that we are working in, I've decided to approach this unit in a unique way. The most important things to take away from this are, the skills necessary for writing a research paper. Please read the RESEARCH PAPER PURPOSE document below. I will be giving you plenty of choices during this unit but I have decided to focus our research on the story of the H.M.S. Gaspee. You've heard me speak about the Gaspee Days Essay Contest and how I've used it for my research paper unit in the past; well, sadly, Gaspee Days was canceled this year due to the pandemic, but that doesn't mean we can't still learn about this important incident in Rhode Island history. That being said, we are going to take this one step at a time. I'd like you to begin by defining the research writing key terms in the document below. I am also including the Middle School Research Paper Guide where you can find the definitions. Don't be intimidated by this long document. You will not be responsible for everything in it but I felt it was a good resource for you to have access to. I would also like you to find and record 10 interesting facts about The Gaspee Incident. I've included a comprehensive and reliable website for you to use.
Finally, please keep up with your Independent Reading and Reading Logs and make-up/finish any past fourth-quarter work that you need to so we can focus our full attention on this important unit. If you scored poorly, below a 70% on the War of the Worlds or Outsiders AR test, I will allow a make-up. You must contact me and arrange it by the end of the school week, 2:00 PM, Friday,4/24.
As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns. I'll also be holding Zoom office hours from 10-12 tomorrow, come see me.

Today you are going to begin your final writing project on The Outsiders. It's on NoRedInk. As you go through the assignment on NoRedInk, it will guide you with tutorials. You will use the writing process and work one step at a time. It's due Next Thursday, 4/16, by 9:00 AM so that I can give you feedback during that day's class so you can make revisions as needed. I will be available via email, Zoom conference or Google Classroom comments to answer questions and guide you through this important writing assignment, reach out to me if you need help! Here is the prompt for you to think about before you even log in to NoRedInk to begin.
You are the same age as Ponyboy from the Outsiders. Although he lived in a different time and a different place; write an essay about the similarities and differences between you and Ponyboy. Use specific events from the story to talk about some lessons you learned from the book that you can apply to your own life. I'm attaching some graphic organizers to help you, You can print them out or just look at them and use a notebook or paper to help organize your ideas and outline.
Some of you still have to either sign up or change your classroom if you moved from Blue to Yellow or vice versa. I sent you email last week to do this. I will be reaching out to you again if you are not in. You need to do this in order to complete this assignment.
Please get started today and don't wait until the last minute. You should also be doing your Independent Reading and Reading Log.
Happy Reading and Writing!
Have a Great Day!

Here is the Reading Log for this week. I will also be posting the 4 Independent Reading Response Assignments for 4th quarter.

Good Morning Students,
Today is a non-lesson day for ELA, as a matter of fact, the only day I will be posting lessons this week is tomorrow, since Thursday and Friday are the first day of Passover and Good Friday. No work is to be assigned to students on these days. Students are not expected to be in class on these days.
I do want to remind you that you should still be doing AT LEAST 20 minutes of Independent Reading every day, therefore, I'm attaching this week's reading log. You only have to fill out 4/6-4/8 but feel free to read on your days off and weekends. I will be available every day to answer questions, give extra help or just check in to say hi if you like. I'll be setting up Zoom Office Hours so you can check in there if you like, or, as always, you can reach out to me by email or commenting on Google Classroom.
Finally, coming up, we're going to be working on our writing. Unless you took it home, our journals are, unfortunately, trapped in my classroom at Western Hills, therefore, I encourage you to start a new journal at home. Write about what's on your mind, write poetry, write stories, letters, or anything else you like, Remember, just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is to practice. The Governor has even asked every Rhode Islander to keep a "Contact Journal."
I'll be posting lessons tomorrow.

Good Morning Blue and Yellow Students,
For today's assignment, I would like you to reflect on The Outsiders. I'm attaching some discussion questions that I would like you to answer in a complete, thoughtful and well-written way. Make sure to use complete sentences, proper grammer, spelling and punctuation. Read over your answers before submitting them to make sure they make sense and don't contain any errors. You can use the book to help you answer the questions and you can use each other too! That's right, have a discussion with your classmates. You can do this via email, text message, facetime, Zoom video, Google Hangouts or any other method you prefer. Just don't leave the house! Don't just discuss this with your close friends; invite other classmates into the discussion who you don't normally hang out with. I'm sure they would love to hear from you. I'm giving you three days to complete this since not everyone is not on the same schedule and connecting with your classmates might take some planning. I will de scheduling a Zoom video meeting for tomorrow, I promise. I will let you know the time after I set it up. I hope you can join us, Janitzy will be there, whe wants to see you all. As always, keep up with your Independent Reading and Reading Log. Have a great Taco Tuesday!

Good Morning Students,
CHECK IN TO HOMEROOM PLEASE!!!
Are you bored yet? Here's a good Idea to dispel that boredom; READ A BOOK! Reading can take you to places you've never been and expose you to things you've never seen. When you're looking for your next book, think about a place that you've always wanted to go or a topic you've always been interested in and find a book about that. I guarantee that it will keep your attention and teach you about things that interest you.
1) Today I would like you to write a digital journal entey. Yellow and Blue classes, tell me your impressions of The Outsiders. Did you like it? What did you think about the ending? If you could write an alternative ending, what would it be?
Red and Green, What are your impressions of War of the Worlds so far? What do you predict will happen in the coming chapters? Back up your predictions with sound reasoning and facts. Who will win the war and how?
As always, you can free write after addressing the prompt. Write a poem, short story or anything else that's on your mind.
2) Check out the video below. The Anne Frank House Museum has produced a youtube series, (15 videos), based on the Idea, what if Anne Frank had a camera and kept a video diary rather than a written one? Videos will be posted on Mondays and Tuesdays. They are in Dutch but you can turn on English subtitles. Who would have guessed that we'd be stuck at home just like Anne Frank? Well, even Anne continued to read and write and do her school work while she was in hiding.
3) I'm still learning about ELA IXL. You can log on to it through Clever. Check it out and familiarize yourself with it. I will be posting IXL assignments in the near future.
4) Hopefully, you got your third Independent reading book, Reading Response and AR test done on time. If you read three books this quarter and submitted the Reading Response, you may read an article for extra credit but you should also find and begin your next book. If you missed one or more deadlines, you can still hand one in by April 5th. You should still be reading every day and recording it on the reading log. In a seperate post, I'm going to post a new one for this week. Ignore the one in this post because it will get turned in and become uneditable when you turn in your journal entry. Please fill it out the new one daily.
5) Finally, I would like to have a Zoom video meeting tomorrow with each class. Because everyone has unique circumstances, I understand that some of you may not be able to join but it would be great if you could, I'd love to see all of you. As an incentive to join, I will have a SPECIAL GUEST online with us, someone who really wants to see you all and misses all of you. I will post the time for each meeting once I set them up.
